about

This project was not originally intended to be released as an album.

When Abdul first sent me these tracks, it was my understanding that these were just sketches to preview some of the new approaches he had been applying to his sound. What he called a “guitar compatibility test” slowly spiraled into this collection of tracks we now call 'Behold, the Wraith'. Pure experimentation with a new instrument, figuring out how this guitar based approach could fit in with his tried and true modular synth workflow.

It felt simple, yet difficult. Oddly comforting. Angular nostalgia. Imperfect beauty. Deep. Although intended to be experimental sketches, something about them gave me the feeling that I was listening to a very meaningful manifestation. Pulling emotions out through those strings, through the synths, into this universe. A true glimpse into his most abstract thoughts + ideas, available for me to interpret and feel in my own way.

"Experimental" can sometimes read like a pretentious or unnecessary adjective, but in this case, it feels right. On 'Behold, the Wraith' I get the sense Abdul is reaching deep within, all while still sorting out out how he wants to use the tools. Some tend to avoid these early iterations when using a new approach, feeling things are “imperfect” and “not quite ready”. However, it’s my opinion that often some of the most interesting art comes from exactly these sessions when everything is unknown, fresh and new.

Aside from editing for length due to the limitations of tape, the sketches remain in their original form.

Composed over the course of 2021 using a collection of modular synths, guitars, monome norns + an assortment of fx pedals, 'Behold, The Wraith' is the spectral descendent to his first Mystery Circles release 'These Haunted Objects'.
